The EQ-i 2.0® model: emotional intelligence at the center of five composites and fifteen subscales

The research behind it. MHS calls the EQ-i 2.0® the first scientifically validated measure of emotional intelligence.

  • Reliability: internal consistency of .97 for Total EI, .88 to .93 for the composites and .77 and up for the subscales. Scores near 1.0 mean the results hold steady.
  • Stable over time: test-retest of .92 at 2 to 4 weeks and .81 at 8 weeks, so a change in scores reflects real development rather than noise.
  • Norms: general-population and professional norms, with regional norms for eight regions.
  • Feedback: in an MHS study of 2,947 employed North American adults, higher Total EI went with greater comfort giving and receiving feedback.

The EQ 360®: how others see it

One certification covers both instruments.

Self-report and multi-rater, side by side

The EQ-i 2.0® shows how a person sees their own emotional intelligence. The EQ 360® adds ratings from managers, direct reports, peers, and others or family and friends, so the debrief can compare the two views. MHS notes the pairing is most often used for leadership development and coaching.

Reports you can run once certified

  • EQ-i 2.0® Workplace and Leadership reports
  • EQ-i 2.0® Group report, for teams
  • EQ-i 2.0® Higher Education report
  • EQ 360® Workplace and Leadership reports

What certification includes

Two live days, but the path starts before them. No surprises between enrolling and your first client debrief.

  1. Enroll and get training portal access. Your pre-work and your own EQ-i 2.0® assessment happen there, before the live days.
  2. Take the EQ-i 2.0® yourself, with a one-to-one debrief. You experience the instrument as a client would, which is what makes the debrief you give later credible instead of theoretical.
  3. Two live online days, 8 AM–5 PM ET, small group. Administration, scoring, interpretation, norming, reliability and validity for both instruments, with live practice on real scenarios. The workbooks and training decks are yours to keep.
  4. The certification exam, in the same training portal. MHS requires 70% or higher.
  5. You're certified. Certificate of completion, Talent Assessment Portal access to run the EQ-i 2.0® and EQ 360® with your own clients, and a verifiable Credly digital badge from MHS.
  6. Add the Change Style Indicator® to your toolkit. During training, James shows you how to access MHS's free, self-paced CSI™ 2 training and Credly badge, and how to buy CSI™ 2 tokens to use it with your clients.

Exam threshold, eLearning (1.5 hours) and instructor-led hours (16): MHS Credly badge criteria, read 6 NOV 2026. Steps 1–3 and 6 from LeaderEI®'s own course. CSI™ 2 training: free, self-paced, with a Credly badge (MHS Credly badge page, read 6 NOV 2026); MHS requires no certification for the CSI™ 2. Cohorts are never more than 12 participants.

About James

Questions before you enroll

What's the difference between the EQ-i 2.0® and the EQ 360®?

The EQ-i 2.0® is a self-report. The EQ 360® adds ratings from the people around someone: managers, direct reports, peers and others. One certification covers both, and the debrief compares the two views.

Do I get my own results as part of certifying?

Yes. You take the EQ-i 2.0® yourself and get a one-to-one debrief before the live days, so you experience it the way your clients will.

What do I do during the two live days?

Administration, scoring, interpretation, norming, reliability and validity for both instruments, taught live in a small group, with practice on real scenarios rather than lecture alone.

Is there an exam?

Yes. You take it in the same training portal you used for pre-work. MHS requires a score of 70% or higher.

What does $777 include?

Your own assessment, the one-to-one debrief, portal access, materials, the exam and your certificate. Why it costs $777.

Which languages and norms are available?

MHS offers the EQ-i 2.0® in 12 languages and the EQ 360® in five, with General Population and Professional norms plus regional norms. LeaderEI® delivers certification in English.

What comes after EQ-i 2.0® certification?

After EQ-i 2.0® certification, you can add the MSCEIT® 2, which measures emotional intelligence as an ability rather than a self-report, or the Pearman™ for personality type and flexibility.
